Living history
Jessamine County was formed in 1798 and named after a flowering plant called the Jessamine.
The land that would become Jessamine County was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Cherokee and Shawnee. In the late 18th century, European settlers began to arrive in the area, attracted by the fertile land and abundant resources.
The first permanent settlement in Jessamine County was established in 1779 by a man named Nicholas Leech. By the early 19th century, the county had become an important center for agriculture, with crops such as hemp, tobacco, and corn being grown.
After the Civil War, Jessamine County continued to grow and develop. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century brought new opportunities for commerce and trade, and the county’s population increased steadily.
Today, Jessamine County is home to several communities, including Nicholasville, the county seat. It is known for its beautiful countryside, rich history, and strong sense of community.
